When we think of herbal remedies, it’s easy to assume that what’s natural is automatically good for everyone. But Ayurveda (the ancient science of life) reminds us that nature’s medicine isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Just like we don’t all wear the same clothes or eat the same meals, we also shouldn’t reach for the same herbs without considering our unique mind-body type (dosha), the season, and even our season of life.
Let’s dive into how Ayurvedic herbal wisdom is deeply personalized, and why being mindful of timing (both external and internal) is key to receiving true healing.
Not Every Herb Is Good for Everyone
In Western wellness circles, we often hear, “Ashwagandha is amazing for stress,” or “Turmeric is the golden cure-all.” And while these herbs are undoubtedly powerful, Ayurveda teaches us that the same herb can be medicine for one person and aggravating for another.
Why? Because we each carry a unique balance of the three doshas:
Vata (air + ether): light, cool, dry, mobile
Pitta (fire + water): hot, sharp, intense
Kapha (earth + water): heavy, stable, moist
Take turmeric, for example. While it’s anti-inflammatory and detoxifying, it can be too heating for someone with a Pitta imbalance (think acne, irritability, heartburn). On the other hand, someone with Kapha tendencies might benefit greatly from its drying and stimulating nature.
The Season of the Year Matters, Too
In Ayurveda, the year is divided into seasonal energies:
Late Winter to Early Spring = Kapha Season
Late Spring to Summer = Pitta Season
Fall to Early Winter = Vata Season
During Pitta season (summer), our environment is already hot and intense. Adding heating herbs like cayenne, garlic, or even too much ginger can throw us out of balance, especially if you’re already a Pitta-dominant person.
Instead, this is the time to favor cooling, calming herbs like:
Brahmi (Gotu Kola) – for a calm, clear mind
Shatavari – nourishing and soothing for body and hormones
Rose – gently cooling, especially in teas or body oils
And Then There’s Your Season of Life
Ayurveda also recognizes that our needs shift as we move through the stages of life:
Childhood = Kapha phase (growth and building) Adulthood = Pitta phase (drive, focus, intensity) Later years = Vata phase (mobility, dryness, lightness)
If you’re in your Vata phase postpartum or over 50, your body may be more prone to dryness, anxiety, and fatigue. You’ll likely benefit from grounding, nourishing herbs, not the same ones someone in their fiery Pitta phase needs.
It’s all connected: your dosha, the climate outside, and the phase of life you’re in.
How to Tune Into What You Need This Summer
