When I first learned about Ayurveda, I wanted to do everything “right.” Wake up at 5am, scrape my tongue, oil my body, meditate, eat only warm, cooked, seasonal food, follow my dosha to the letter, and make every choice according to the clock, the weather, and the moon. Spoiler alert: I lasted about two days.
What I’ve learned since, especially as a working mom with a 9-month-old baby on my hip, is this: Ayurveda isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. And when you approach it that way, it actually starts to work.
The Trap of “Doing It Right”
Ayurveda is a beautiful, ancient system of harmony. But in the modern world, it can quickly become another wellness checklist:
Morning routine? Check. No iced drinks? Check. Meditation, abhyanga, proper food combining? Check, check, check. Until one day… you forget. Or skip it. Or feel overwhelmed. And then the guilt kicks in.
Here’s the truth: Ayurveda was never meant to make you feel bad.
It’s not a rulebook, it’s a rhythm. It invites you to observe, adjust, and return. Not to strive, restrict, or obsess.
What Real Ayurveda Looks Like
Some days, real-life Ayurveda looks like:
Drinking warm tea while nursing your baby on the couch. Saying no to a plan because your energy feels off. Massaging your feet at night instead of a full-body ritual. Eating leftovers mindfully instead of making a fresh meal.
It’s not always Instagrammable. It’s not always pretty. But it’s incredibly healing when you show up with love instead of judgment.
When Perfection Blocks Progress
Trying to do everything “perfectly” often leads to burnout (especially for mamas, creatives, and ambitious women who already carry so much).
In Ayurveda, balance is the goal, not rigidity. The doshas shift constantly. So should your routine. You’re not meant to follow the same exact plan every single day. You’re meant to feel, respond, and adapt.
Start Where You Are
Here’s my gentle nudge:
Start with what feels nourishing. One small ritual. One moment of awareness. One intuitive choice. That’s more powerful than any “perfect” routine.
Some simple places to begin:
A cup of warm lemon water in the morning
Eating without screens or multitasking
Saying a mantra while lighting a candle
Noticing how your body feels before labeling your dosha
