I was born in Puerto Rico, I grew up in Florida… and honestly, I used to hate the heat. The sticky humidity, the relentless sun… I couldn’t wait to get away from it. Then I moved to New York, spent a few long winters there, and let’s just say now I can’t get enough of the heat. Funny how the grass always seems greener, right?
But it wasn’t until I found Ayurveda that I truly learned how to love summer (not just tolerate it). I realized it wasn’t the season itself that left me feeling drained and irritable, it was how I was moving through it out of sync with nature.
The Ayurvedic Perspective on Summer
In Ayurveda, summer is ruled by Pitta dosha … hot, sharp, intense energy. When that heat goes unchecked, it can lead to burnout, skin sensitivity, frustration, and digestive issues. But Ayurveda gives us tools to stay cool, calm, and balanced so we can actually enjoy all the beauty and vibrancy summer has to offer.
3 Simple Shifts That Helped Me Thrive in Summer:
✅ Favoring cooling foods and drinks.
I swapped out heavy, spicy meals for fresh seasonal fruits, crisp greens, cucumber salads, and coconut water, my body felt lighter and my mood lifted.
✅ Slowing down my routine.
Instead of rushing into the day, I take time for simple rituals (a gentle stretch, light oil massage, cool shower, and stepping outside early while it’s still soft and quiet).
✅ Honoring rest and shade.
Longer days don’t mean I have to be “on” all day. I give myself permission to take breaks, seek shade, and wind down earlier, especially important as a mama.
The Result?
I no longer dread summer … I embrace it. I feel at ease with the heat because I’ve learned how to move with it instead of fight it.
If summer has you feeling overheated or frazzled, Ayurveda can help you flow through the season with ease and grace. and it doesn’t have to be complicated.
