Why Like Attracts Like in Ayurveda (And Why Tantra Teaches Us to Get Uncomfortable)

Have you ever noticed how miserable people tend to surround themselves with other miserable people? Or how those who thrive on chaos seem to attract more chaos into their lives? It’s not just a coincidence, it’s energy. Like attracts like. And in Ayurveda, this concept is woven into the way our doshas behave.

The Ayurvedic Mirror: What You Crave Isn’t Always What You Need

Ayurveda teaches us that each dosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) has natural tendencies. The tricky part? What we crave often feeds our imbalance instead of restoring harmony.

Pitta doshas are fiery, ambitious, and sharp. They’re naturally drawn to spicy, hot foods, but those same foods can fuel irritation, inflammation, and burnout. Vata doshas are airy, quick-moving, and creative. They want to stay up late, ride waves of inspiration, and skip meals, but this only heightens anxiety, insomnia, and instability. Kapha doshas are grounded, steady, and nurturing. They love staying in, snuggling up, and avoiding change, but that keeps them stuck, sluggish, and stagnant.

See the pattern? Like attracts like. The doshas naturally crave what exacerbates them.

That’s why Ayurveda gently nudges us toward the opposite quality… cooling foods for Pitta, grounding rituals for Vata, invigorating activity for Kapha. It’s the art of balance.

Tantra: Growth Through Discomfort

This idea isn’t limited to Ayurveda, it’s at the heart of Tantra. True expansion, healing, and transformation come when we stretch beyond our comfort zones.

For Pitta, that might mean choosing a cooling cucumber salad instead of another fiery curry. For Vata, it could mean grounding with warm, cooked meals and early bedtimes, even when inspiration strikes at midnight. For Kapha, it may mean saying “yes” to movement, new adventures, and social connection, instead of curling up at home.

Growth requires discomfort. Expansion asks us to go against our cravings and embrace what truly nourishes us. That’s tantra in action.

Bringing Balance Into Your Daily Life

The beauty of Ayurveda is that you don’t need to overhaul your entire life to find balance. Small, intentional choices each day help shift your energy:

The Takeaway

Misery attracts misery, chaos attracts chaos, and imbalance attracts imbalance. But Ayurveda gives us the tools to break the cycle. When we lean into the opposite quality, we create space for growth, healing, and expansion.

It’s not always easy. In fact, it’s often uncomfortable. But that discomfort is the doorway to transformation… that is Tantra.
